On the morning of April 13, 1777, British and Hessian forces launched a surprise attack on General Washington's encampment in Bound Brook. Outnumbered, Washington and his Continental Army staged a fighting retreat across the Raritan River — a pivotal moment in the New Jersey campaign of the American Revolution.

Each spring, Bound Brook and South Bound Brook come alive with one of New Jersey's premier living history weekends, featuring full military reenactments, a 18th-century soldiers' encampment at the historic Abraham Staats House, period music, family activities, and a solemn commemoration ceremony at the Old Presbyterian Graveyard.
